To the ski area:

The Sonnenkopf ski area is the only 3TälerPass ski area located in the Klostertal. With its 38 km of slopes and ski routes and its 9 lifts, the Sonnenkopf attracts visitors from near and far – also because of the special location at the foot of the Arlberg. The many kilometres of slopes on the Sonnenkopf not only offer skiing fun for families, but also for freeriders who appreciate the back-country area and also people who want to go on a winter hike, sledding or cross-country skiing will also get their money’s worth at the Sonnenkopf. Thanks to the height of the ski area (up to 2300 meters), the Sonnenkopf is known as an excellent ski area with natural snow, where you can ski well into spring.

About us:

We are Moritz and Christiane from Bregenz and this year we will explore the different ski areas of the 3TälerPass. Christiane only started skiing last year and will start her second skiing season in 2018/2019. This will give you an insight into the ski areas from a beginner’s perspective. Since Moritz has been on skis for a while, he also feels comfortable on steep slopes. He will describe his impressions for more advanced skier.

Our day in the Sonnenkopf ski area:

Perfect skiing weather had been announced – since we still had a few vacation days left, we didn’t hesitate long and took time off to go skiing on the Sonnenkopf. The arrival is simply great, because the ski area is located directly on the S16 expressway (“Wald am Arlberg” exit).

The Sonnenkopfbahn starts only a few meters from the parking lot. When you have arrived at the top, the view from the top is simply breath-taking! All around, you have a wonderful view of the surrounding mountains.

We were lucky and were among the first on the slopes – and it was just fun! The 4-seater chairlift, the Obermuri cable car, takes you to 2200 meters. From there we took exits 5 (blue), 6 and 11 (both red) a few times. Always with great views of the mountains and the valley. The ski area looks quite large because it is so long, but still easy to find your way around. At noon, we stopped at the Muttjöchle panoramic restaurant, right at the mountain station of the Riedkopfbahn. The view from there is great and the kitchen is highly recommended!

Favourite slope Moritz:

I preferred to ride the 5 on the Sonnenkopf (see map below). The slope is wide and the panorama that is offered is simply magnificent! There are also some steeper sections where you can really get some speed.

Favourite slope Christiane:

My favourite slope is clearly the 1 (see map below)! You drive through the snowy forest to the middle station of the Sonnenkopfbahn – I just enjoy this route.

There are various ways to stop at the Sonnenkopf. We particularly liked the location (and the excellent cuisine) of the panorama restaurant Muttjöchle. The mountain restaurant on the Sonnenkopf (right at the mountain station) also offers other places to stop and if you like a rustic hut atmosphere, you should stop by the slope 1 in the Bündthütte.

For après-ski, a visit to the Kelobar at the valley station or the ice bar at the mountain restaurant is recommended.

What is special about the Sonnenkopf ski area:

In our opinion, the ski area Sonnenkopf scores with the great location on the Arlberg, the easy accessibility and the possibility of skiing on natural snow until spring. We particularly liked the vastness of the ski area.

Warth-Schröcken is another amazing ski area included in the 3TälerPass, you can find more here.
